Saskatchewan Broadband Action Committee

The Saskatchewan Broadband Action Committee (SBAC) is a cross-sector and community-based group of provincial, local, and Indigenous organizations, and networks. The Committee was formed through a collective concern over the issues and lost opportunities for all citizens related to broadband connectivity across the province. Our key focus is to assist with addressing long-standing issues affecting broadband connectivity; and advise and direct actions leading to a shared strategy, investment, and vision. The SSBA has been involved with SBAC since its inception as access to better connectivity in the province is critical for the education sector.

The Need for Change:

  • Saskatchewan continues to receive the lowest per capita investment from the Federal Government.
  • Persistent digital divide for individuals living on First Nations and in rural and remote communities.
  • 53% of the province does not have access to broadband 50/10 high-speed.
  • Saskatchewan is currently the only province without a provincial plan related to improving broadband infrastructure.

Call to Action:

As a committee we’ve outlined five key calls to action for the Provincial and Federal Government to develop of a Provincial Broadband Plan and receive greater investment in broadband infrastructure – outlined in the 2025 SBAC Briefing Note.

To further our cause, our ask of you is to continue to raise this issue and ask questions with your local MLA and the Provincial Government. Together, we can achieve broadband parity for all Saskatchewan residents, regardless of address.

Keep Investing in Students

Saskatchewan’s school boards are encouraged that some funding was restored in the provincial budget for 2018-19, but are calling for renewed investment in education going forward.

School boards have been calling for restored and renewed investment after funding for education was cut significantly in the provincial budget for the previous year, 2017-18. The funding announced in the 2018-19 budget will improve the ability of boards to address pressures facing school division operations, but continued growth and inflation means funding levels remain concerning.

Education Belongs to Community

Education Belongs to Community is a campaign school boards launched in 2016 to bring forward local and community voice in education.

  • For more than 100 years, the work of the SSBA and its member boards has remained deeply rooted in the belief that every child in Saskatchewan, regardless of where they live or their personal circumstances, must have the resources and supports they need to achieve and succeed. Research shows that Local Boards Matter.
  • School boards are committed to working with the Government of Saskatchewan to ensure the best outcomes for students, and that the focus in education stays steadfast on continuing the progress we are seeing with the Education Sector Strategic Plan and the Student First approach.
  • For 2015-16, school boards identified approximately $9 million in accumulated efficiencies.
