About the AssociationThe Saskatchewan School Boards Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to excellence in public education by providing leadership and services to Saskatchewan school boards. The Saskatchewan School Boards Association, as a democratic and voluntary organization, ensures advocacy, leadership and support for member boards of education by speaking as the voice of public education, offering opportunities for trustee development and providing information and services. School boards are elected to govern Kindergarten to Grade 12 education in their school divisions and are essential members of local government. They ensure that the wishes of the community are reflected in the division's schools and make decisions that shape the education of Saskatchewan's children. The Saskatchewan School Boards Association supports boards in this very important work. |

History
The Saskatchewan School Boards Association was established in 1915 under its former name, the Saskatchewan School Trustees Association or SSTA. Membership in the Association is, and has always been, voluntary. Interest in the Association was significant from the start with 3,000 trustee delegates attending annual conventions in the early years. Dedicated individuals devoted much time and energy to keeping the Association alive without the assistance of full-time staff. The activities of the Association initially consisted of publishing a monthly journal and attempting to influence the provincial government with respect to education-related legislation.
The Association came of age in 1952 when it was incorporated by a special Act of the Legislature. This legislation reaffirmed the voluntary nature of the Association.
It is important to understand that the Saskatchewan School Boards Association represents boards of education, not individual trustees. In other words, division board trustees belong to the Association by virtue of the fact that their division board belongs. The Association represents public and separate school division boards of education, as well as francophone school divisions or Conseils scolaires fransaskois.
Our Members
The Saskatchewan School Boards Association represents public, separate and francophone school divisions and reflects the rural, urban and northern diversity of our province. Membership in the Saskatchewan School Boards Association is voluntary and is open to school boards and First Nations education authorities.

Our Work
We are advocates for education
- Members of the Provincial Executive of the Saskatchewan School Boards Association act as advocates for education, addressing local and provincial issues. They also represent the Association on various working groups relating to education and local government. Saskatchewan School Boards Association staff support the Executive in their role as advocates, and help to ensure effective communication among member boards, the Executive, the education community and the community at large.
- Sharing research and information developed especially for boards of education is an important role of the Saskatchewan School Boards Association.
- The Saskatchewan School Boards Association, as a voluntary, democratic organization assists school boards to effectively govern school divisions.
How We Are Governed
The Saskatchewan School Boards Association:
- Sets priorities based in large measure upon the resolutions passed by the membership at the annual Fall Assembly held each November;
- Conducts business between Assemblies through its elected Executive; and,
- Implements and coordinates its policy initiatives through its Executive Director and Staff members.
